Hydration 101: Protecting Your Skin from a Dry Climate

The sun is shining and spirits are lifting. Unfortunately, your skin doesn’t see the same benefits. Warmer, drier climates can wreak havoc on hydration levels and consequently, your skin suffers for it. Busy lifestyles can mean that our recommended daily intake of water is often neglected. We explain why hydration is so important and let you in on some tips for optimum hydration and glowing summer skin.

The importance of hydration

Dehydrated skin is caused by a lack of moisture and can cause problems with both skin appearance and skin health. Properly hydrated skin helps prevent the effects of aging, and gives you a glowing, youthful complexion. Having an adequate amount of moisture in the outer layer of the skin allows it to effectively flush out toxins and carry nutrients for skin cell rejuvenation. Hydrated skin is also able to maintain a balanced pH level, which minimises the risk of infection.

7 signs of skin dehydration

Is your skin showing any of these signs of dehydration?

  • Dry or rough to the touch or look
  • Flaking or peeling
  • Fine lines
  • Dull appearance
  • Tightness
  • Irritation to the point of cracking
  • Inflammation, itchiness, redness or sensitivity

Tips for staying hydrated

The recommended daily intake of water is 2L or 8 x 250ml glasses. Even if you aren’t feeling thirsty, you should be regularly sipping on water throughout the day.

Drinking from your favourite water bottle can help you establish good water habits. If your water bottle is larger than 250ml, this can make it easier to keep track of your intake throughout the day as you won’t need to refill it as many times.

If you are currently drinking a lot less water than recommended, it is best to gradually increase your water consumption. Try increasing by an additional half cup of water each day to make it easier to continue long-term.

Delicious Infused Water Recipes

If you find it difficult to drink plain water, try water infused with fruit for a refreshing alternative. Simply slice up the fruit, place into a pitcher with water and steep for one hour in the refrigerator. Stir gently before serving.

  1. Cucumber, mint and lemon

Cucumber has high water content and is known for its cooling and cleansing properties.

  1. Watermelon and kiwi fruit

Watermelon contains lycopene which has anti-aging properties. Kiwi fruit has zinc which is vital for skin health.

  1. Grapefruit, orange and lime

Grapefruit is rich in antioxidants and has high water content to even skin tone and hydrate.

Topical hydration tips

It’s recommended you support internal hydration with topical applications to help the skin retain moisture. Hyaluronic acid is a key moisturizing aid in topical treatments. It replenishes moisture levels and revitalizes the skin on a deep level. Combat dehydration with Luzern Serum Absolut Rehydrate which contains an incredible 10% hyaluronic acid for light-weight hydration and more supple skin. Boost hydration further and balance pH with Luzern Alpine O2 Glacier Toner, containing 2.5% hyaluronic acid. Correct persistant dehydration including reducing appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and increasing volumn in the skin with Jan Marini Hyla3D
